Lyle was born on June 17, 1949 in Seattle, Washington, and is the oldest of three siblings. He loves the Pacific Northwest and would not choose to live anywhere else. He enjoys fond memories of adolescent years spent exploring the San Juan Islands in his family's cabin cruiser and of four summers working as a counselor at YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas Island.

Throughout his adult life, Lyle has enjoyed hiking the trails of the Cascade Mountains and Mount Rainier National Park. He is an avid swing dancer who loves dancing to blues music and good old-fashioned rock and roll. He also enjoys golf and tennis. Lyle has one grown daughter who, like himself, is an avid WSU Cougar fan.
